Ravensworth Road

In 2005 The Gateshead Housing Company (TGHC) working with consultants carried out a survey with tenants of Derwent Tower and the maisonettes on Ravensworth Road.

The aim of the survey was to get tenants’ views on the area and their opinions on future housing and regeneration of the area. Following on from that, the Council appointed consultants in October 2007 who are carrying out an ‘option appraisal’ (a study of possible options for the regeneration of the area) and are developing a neighbourhood plan for the Ravensworth Road area.

TGHC also carried out one-to-one interviews with tenants of the maisonettes to see if tenants’ views had changed over the last two years. The results from these interviews showed that

• 99% supported the demolition of Derwent Tower with one tenant against

• 78% of the tenants supported the demolition of both Derwent Tower and the maisonettes

Then, a public consultation event took place in February 2008 to which the wider Dunston Community was invited. Over one hundred residents came to give their views on how they would like to see the area change. The event consisted of a public exhibition and a questionnaire. The results from the questionnaire showed that

• 96% of residents visiting the exhibition supported the demolition of Derwent Tower with the remaining 4% being undecided

• 92% of the residents felt that both Derwent Tower and the maisonettes should be demolished so that new development could take place and a new Dunston Urban Village developed.

On 27th and 28th March 2008 the Council held a second Public Consultation Event at Dunston Activity Centre. This event fed back on the results from the last public exhibition and raised different ideas about housing, retail and open space for discussion. A questionnaire was also provided for residents to give their views and ideas.
