Newcastle private rented team doubles in size to cope with demand

A team dedicated to improving standards in the private rented sector has more than doubled in size as it extends its area of operation to cover the whole of Newcastle..

The Newcastle Private Rented Project is now working to replicate its achievements in the West End – such as fewer empty properties, better quality accommodation and less crime - city-wide.

The Project, which is now working with around 100 landlords every month, has appointed five new members of staff. The new team members will be helping tenants who are seeking good quality private rented accommodation as well as supporting landlords looking for reliable tenants.

The team is funded by the housing market renewal pathfinder Bridging NewcastleGateshead, and is a partnership between private landlords, Newcastle City Council, Home Group and NomadE5.

Joining the team as a project officer and working along side Emma Knowles and Sarah Haswell, is Kobir Ahmed who was previously employed by the Gateshead Private Rented Sector team.

Four new project assistants have also been appointed. They are Pat Boyd, previously the team’s admin assistant; Ian Teasdale and Carly Doherty who worked for Your Homes Newcastle, and Kate Born who joins from Newcastle City Council. The new admin assistant is Andrea Hughes who also previously worked with Newcastle City Council, within the legal department.

Claire McMullen, Project Manager commented: "We set up nearly a decade ago to support the private rented sector in the West End, and since that time, we have grown significantly, making some real achievements in the housing sector.

"There is clearly a need for support services such as ours and in light of what we have achieved in the West End, we are extending our remit to cover the whole of the city.

"hese new appointments will enable us to work with even more landlords and tenants, ultimately improving standards in the private rented sector across Newcastle."
