FAMILY FUN AT BENFEST 2006

Music, workshops and food from around the world will be on offer at this year’s ‘Benfest’, which will take place at Farndale Road Park on Saturday 2 nd September at 11am.

This year’s event, which will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Diane Packham, is entitled ‘Unity’ and is set to be a celebration of the various cultures that live in the West End of Newcastle. Residents who attend are encouraged to wear traditional dress of their own culture and spot prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

As usual, North Benwell’s Neighbourhood Management Initiative has planned the event jointly with residents and other agencies so there will be a varied mix of stalls and workshops for all the family to enjoy with many of the activities being either free or low cost. Attractions include healthy eating and Fairtrade stalls, craft stalls, bric- a- brac, a raffle and tombola.

Organisations who will be taking part include Community Action on Health, The Rights Project, SureStart, Northumbrian Water and Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade. Residents will also be able to get employment advice and support from Jobcentre Plus and JET.

Siobhan O’Neil, Neighbourhood Manager, says: ‘In recent years, Benfest has been a big hit and this year’s festival will, once again, demonstrate that local people themselves are committed to making the community a safe and vibrant place to live.’
