£9million approved for regeneration schemes in NewcastleGateshead
More than £9million in funding has been awarded to projects which will improve housing quality and choice in NewcastleGateshead.
The funding has been approved by Bridging NewcastleGateshead (BNG) and will be spent on projects which support BNG’s vision of creating great places to live across parts of NewcastleGateshead.
Amongst the schemes benefiting is the Walker Riverside regeneration project which is set to receive around £5million. Included in this is £1.2 million for a programme of external improvements, such as replacement windows, roof repairs and re-pointing, to 215 properties on Sandy Crescent .
In addition, properties in three areas of Scotswood and Benwell will benefit from external improvement works. This work, including around £2.5 million of improvements to homes in Axwell Park View, Bishops Road and Scotswood Village , will aim to make a real difference to the areas involved.
Jim Coulter, Chair of Bridging NewcastleGateshead commented: “Earlier this year, we received £64 million from the Government to enable us to continue our work to create great places to live in NewcastleGateshead.
“Through extensive research and an in-depth understanding of the housing market in our area, we are able to target accurately this funding to benefit many communities and neighbourhoods.
“We are very pleased to approve this £9 million funding and demonstrate our support and commitment to projects and schemes which are bringing positive change to communities.”
Amongst the other schemes approved for BNG funding are:
- Quarter of a million for the second stage of a scheme in North Benwell to convert 11 boarded-up flats into five renovated family homes for owner occupation. This follows the success of stage one which saw five converted family homes snapped up by owner-occupiers in just one week.
- Over half a million to support the Newcastle Private Rented Project which helps to raise property and management standards in the private rented sector by offering free support and advice to tenants, landlords and agencies.
- Half a million for development sites in Byker that will provide new homes to rent and own in the future.
Marie Fallon, NCC Director of Regeneration said:
“Our vision for Newcastle is to make the city a better place to live, work and visit. We have exciting plans to transform residential areas along the Tyne over the next 15 years and Bridging NewcastleGateshead’s support is very important in helping us to make this a reality. We are delighted to receive this funding so that we can start to make a real difference to housing quality and choice i n parts of the city that really need it .”
