54 homeowners living on Durham Road in Gateshead are benefiting from improvements to their properties in a scheme which will change the overall appearance of this residential area.

The scheme, which is being delivered by Gateshead Council and funded by Bridging NewcastleGateshead (BNG), with a contribution from owners, includes new boundary walls, railings, fences and gates. In addition, homes are also benefiting from painting, new rainwater pipes, new guttering, paths, steps, and window and front door repairs and replacements. Where necessary, structural improvements to the properties have also been carried out. The Durham Road improvements aim to make the area more sustainable.

Jeff McCall has lived on Durham Road for four years and his Victorian terrace is currently undergoing improvement work totaling £8,400. He said:

"At the moment, the improvements are underway. Once they are complete, I think the house and the whole street will begin to look better - in fact, they already are."

"The improvements make you want to look after your home more, they improve the street."

Karen Anderson, BNG's Head of Research & Strategy commented: "This scheme will improve the overall appearance of Durham Road and create a good first impression of Gateshead. Another benefit is that all landlords participating in the work will, through the Council's accreditation process, become members of the Gateshead Private Landlords Association."

The improvements are part of an overall programme of work by Gateshead Council. There has also been a traffic study along Durham Road.

Sheila Johnston, Director of Development and Enterprise with Gateshead Council said: "These homes are situated on a major routeway in Gateshead and the homes are being transformed, making them much more attractive."
